£1,000 subsidy for 'Green Internships'

March 19, 2012

Please note: the Green Undergraduate Internship Scheme has now closed. This news item is for information only.

* Bring talented, ambitious individuals into your business without the risks associated with permanent recruitment.
* Secure a dedicated temporary employee that can finally address the projects and activities that keep being delayed.
* Get help with specific business needs from a capable, enthusiastic intern with up-to-date skills and knowledge.

A new initiative providing environmental businesses with £1,000 of funding toward the temporary recruitment of an undergraduate can help you achieve all these things. Lasting for 8 weeks (if full-time) participating employers can contribute a minimum of £800 - just £20 per day.

Offered by the Environmental iNet and the University of the West of England (UWE), the scheme is open to environmental businesses and covers vacancies relating to various disciplines from marketing, graphic design and HR, to environmental management, engineering and the sciences.

What is an undergraduate internship?

By facilitating the temporary recruitment of a high-calibre undergraduate student, these internships provide businesses with a risk free method for securing capable individuals to work on short-term projects. They can also contribute to longer staffing strategies, enabling employers to build relationships with potential future employees.

Participation in any university internship programme can help achieve corporate social responsibility targets and ensures businesses play a part in inspiring the next crop of professionals in their field. Interns recruited through this scheme will be studying for a degree at UWE.

With expertise spanning business, law, computing, the creative industries, engineering and life sciences, as well as environmental specialisms such as low carbon technology, the built environment and air quality management, UWE is able to offer students with a diverse set of abilities.

How does the scheme work?

  • Full-time internships last for 8 weeks; part-time options are also available (and work on a pro rata basis)
  • £1,000 (inc VAT) of funding is granted to the employer
  • This is paid upon successful appointment/contract release
  • The employer commits £800 (+VAT if charged)
  • National Insurance is paid on top of this
  • Interns must be paid through PAYE
  • There is no limit on the number of advertised vacancies
  • Interns can only be funded once for a role
  • A dedicated UWE team are on hand to help

Timings

8 week internships can commence anytime after 25th May and conclude anytime before 14th September 2012. There is more flexibility with regard to the part-time option. The recruitment process can begin immediately.
